A Winter Checklist for you to use
Sometimes we get to Winter and I think, phew, lets slow down and have a wee garden break…Then I remember….Spring, busy, work, so much to do….and that, actually, I have a million Winter jobs to tackle, and how late I leave it every year!
So I have decided to do a bit of a winter checklist, outlining all the important jobs that are best done over the mostly dormant season. Maybe next year I can start early and be super prepared in time for the warm weather!
Hopefully these jobs will help all you budding gardeners (ha!) to get prepared for amazing Spring gardens!
First Half of Winter
Plant bulbs
Plan & build spaces for produce storage
Harvest summer produce
Tend to winter plantings (planted at the end of spring)
Plant trees! I love this bit, make sure to dig a nice big hole and add a good soil/compost mix. It is so exciting placing tree orders and finally getting them as winter stock arrives.
Second Half of Winter
Pruning-especially fruit trees
Spray fruit trees for fungal prevention
Hardwood cuttings
Sow progressive winter crops
Clear beds after summer harvests
Treat any known pest &/or disease issues especially in the soil
Prep and condition empty beds for spring
Mulch new and existing gardens
Design and plan spring and summer gardens & veges
Winter is also a perfect time to plan and price new projects, gardens &/or structures. After spending the previous seasons watching your garden and figuring out how much extra work you DON’T want to do around it, get in touch we can help you design and build your vision in time for summer.
Winter End….it’s getting warmer!!!
Start sowing early spring crops indoors
Get on top of those weeds that have popped up
Consider frost protection for early flowering fruit trees (especially in North Canterbury!!)
Sharpen the mower blades
As you can see, Winter is not a break at all really! If you need a hand or a price for a project, get in touch we would love to help you get on top of your outdoor space.
